Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine

The Head of the Clinic for Pediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine is Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Paul. In close cooperation with Prof. Dr. med. Theodor Tirilomis, Head of Pediatric Heart Surgery within the Clinic for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery of the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), this clinic is responsible for pediatric cardiology and all operations on children with congenital heart defects as well as heart arrhythmias.

Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic

The Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic examines and treats children of all ages afflicted with congenital and acquired diseases of the cardiovascular system. There are special consultation times reserved for the respective ailments. Parents who have a suspicion that their unborn child might have a heart defect can receive a prenatal consultation in cooperation with the University Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics. This includes ultrasounds of the heart of the unborn child (fetal echocardiography). Other tasks of the functional laboratory include ultrasounds of the heart, stress ECGs, normal ECGs and long-term ECGs as well as aftercare for pacemakers and ICDs (ICD = implantable cardioverter defibrillator).

Treatment of Adults with Congenital Heart Defects (ACHD)

The Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic also has an experienced team consisting of experts from the sections on pediatric and adult cardiology to treat young adults with congenital heart defects (sometimes called “former child heart cases”). Diagnosis and treatment are done in the Pediatric Heart Catheter Laboratory or in the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic. Close-meshed care both before and after heart transplantation is provided for patients with severe heart failure.

Pediatric Pulmonary and Allergology Outpatient Clinic

This outpatient clinic treats not only chronically ill pediatric patients with pulmonary diseases, but also girls and boys with allergic syndromes. Besides various lung-function tests (spirometry), this clinic also offers a complete bronchoscopic unit for further diagnostic purposes.

Cardio Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI) and Computer Tomography (CT)

This noninvasive imagery method is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology of the University Medical Center Göttingen (Head: Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Lotz) using ultramodern tomographic apparatus. The analysis of the data is done by an expert team of pediatric cardiologists/ACHD doctors and radiologists.

Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The cardiac catheterization laboratory is equipped with a modern biplane digital X-ray system for carrying out all types of cardiac catheterization procedures as well as the treatment of heart valve diseases, the extension of vascular constrictions and the insertion of stents as well as the implantation of pulmonary valves. A further focal point lies in invasive electrophysiological diagnostics and catheter ablation for cardiac arrhythmias in young patients or young adults with congenital heart defects. A three-dimensional, radiation-free diagnostic system is available for young patients with complex cardia arrhythmias.

Inpatient Care

Pediatric Cardiology Ward for Normal Care and Monitoring (Station 2014)

Station 2014 has a total of 20 beds, all of which are outfitted with modern telemetric monitoring so that patients can walk about freely. Their parents can stay in a nearby special Parents Home; in the case of very small children one parent can always remain on the ward near their child.

Intensive Care Medicine (Station 0133)

This large intensive care unit combines a neonatalogical and a pediatric unit serving a total of 20 beds. The pediatric section is home to very ill children and other young patients following operations, where they are closely monitored and treated. Special emphasis is given the time immediately following heart operations of all types and catheter-based interventions. The most modern methods and apparatus from intensive care medicine including artificial-heart techniques are available here.

Further main foci of our department include research and the teaching of Medical Students.
